Find the reason for the assessment

Online availability makes a payroll tax assessment easier to find, but does not establish why it was issued. Compare the period and amount with the filed return, corrections, receipt confirmation and bank payment. Missing filings and payment differences require different responses.

Track the assessment’s own deadlines

Payment and objection dates run alongside the normal payroll calendar. Waiting for the next salary run may be too late. Assign responsibility for checking messages and ensure an authorised person can act during absences.

Correct the cause rather than just the balance

A misallocated payment does not necessarily require a corrected return. An additional payment does not repair incorrect employee data. Reconcile payroll, filing and payment first, then consider affected journal entries and annual statements. Keep the outcome and follow-up responsibility in the file.
